How sales tax works in Yukon

Yukon charges the federal 5% GST and has no territorial sales tax. The CRA's GST/HST rate table lists Yukon at 5% GST and 0% PST.

The Canada Revenue Agency administers the GST, so a Whitehorse business registers, files and pays with the CRA only. Invoices for sales made in Yukon show a single 5% GST line.

Who has to register and charge it

Registration follows the federal small-supplier rule. Once taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register with the CRA and start charging GST. Our GST/HST registration guide walks through it.

Self-employed taxi and ride-sharing drivers must register even below that amount. Online sellers can also read our Shopify taxes guide for how store settings handle these rates.

Selling to customers outside Yukon

Yukon's rate only applies to Yukon sales. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, goods are generally taxed where they are delivered and most services at the customer's address. A Whitehorse business shipping to Ontario charges 13% HST, while a shipment to Alberta stays at 5% GST.

British Columbia is a common market for Yukon sellers, and B.C. says businesses located outside the province that sell to B.C. customers may also need to register to collect its 7% PST. Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec have similar rules, covered in the rates by province guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there PST in Yukon?

No. Yukon has no territorial sales tax, so taxable sales carry only the 5% GST.

How do I take GST out of a Yukon price?

Divide the GST-included price by 1.05. For example, $1,050 divided by 1.05 is $1,000, so the GST is $50.

Do I charge B.C. PST when I sell to a customer in Vancouver?

You may have to. B.C. says businesses located outside the province that sell to B.C. customers may need to register to collect PST, so check B.C.'s registration rules before selling there regularly.

What do I charge a customer in Ontario?

Goods delivered to Ontario and most services billed to an Ontario address are charged 13% HST instead of 5% GST.

Do small Yukon businesses have to charge GST?

Not while they are small suppliers. You must register once taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters.
