How sales tax works in New Brunswick

New Brunswick charges a 15% harmonized sales tax (HST). The Government of New Brunswick describes it as a federal component of 5% plus a provincial component of 10%.

The province states that the Canada Revenue Agency administers the HST on behalf of all the participating provinces. That means a New Brunswick business deals with the CRA for HST, not a provincial tax office.

Who has to register and charge it

The CRA small-supplier rule decides when you must start. Exceed $30,000 in taxable sales in a single calendar quarter, or over four consecutive calendar quarters, and you must register and begin charging 15%. See our registration guide for the steps.

Self-employed taxi and commercial ride-sharing drivers must register even below that amount. After registering, keep track of your filing dates with the tax calendar.

Selling to customers outside New Brunswick

The rate on an invoice depends on the place of supply. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, goods are generally taxed in the province of delivery and most services in the province of the customer's address. A Fredericton maker shipping to Halifax charges 14% Nova Scotia HST, and one shipping to Montreal charges 5% GST.

Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia have provincial sales taxes with separate rules for outside sellers, so check before taking regular orders there. The rates by province guide has every rate side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HST rate in New Brunswick?

New Brunswick HST is 15%. It is made up of the 5% federal GST and a 10% provincial component.

How do I take HST out of a New Brunswick price?

Divide the tax-included price by 1.15. For example, $115 divided by 1.15 is $100, so the HST is $15.

Who collects HST in New Brunswick?

The Canada Revenue Agency administers the HST for New Brunswick and the other participating provinces. You register, file and pay through the CRA.

Do I charge 15% to a customer in Nova Scotia?

No. Goods delivered to Nova Scotia take Nova Scotia's 14% HST, and most services follow the customer's address, so a Nova Scotia client is usually charged 14%.

Do I need to charge HST if I just started my business?

Not until your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, unless an exception such as taxi services applies.
