- Vendors cannot pay for a review, a rating, a ranking, or a placement on this site.
- We may earn affiliate commissions, but commission rates play no part in which tools we recommend. A tool with no affiliate program can rank above one that pays us.
- We only add a button to visit a vendor's site when we earn from it or have applied to its affiliate program. Tools without one are reviewed, rated and ranked the same way; they just have no button.
- Vendors do not see or approve our reviews before publication.
- If a vendor gives us free access for testing, the article says so.
- We do not recommend or promote interest-bearing products: interest-earning accounts, credit or charge cards, loans, lines of credit, overdraft, financing, or buy-now-pay-later. Where interest comes up as a fact (such as CRA interest on late tax), we report it without promoting it.
- We do not publish sponsored articles. If that ever changes, sponsored content will be labelled as sponsored at the top of the page.
How we earn money is explained on our affiliate disclosure page, and how we evaluate products is on how we review.
Our own products
NorthVetted is published by Methodical Studio, which also builds GetMarkup, invoicing and compliance software for Canadian trades. That is a conflict of interest, and we handle it this way:
- GetMarkup is always labelled as our product wherever it appears.
- It is evaluated against the same criteria as every other tool in the comparison.
- It is never ranked first on the strength of being ours.
- We tell readers to weigh our view of it accordingly.

Corrections log
- October 21, 2026, How to Start an Online Store in Canada: Updated the WooCommerce Canada Post Shipping Method extension price (CAD $157 a year, was $153), so the lean WooCommerce estimate is now about $63 to $475 for year one. We also stated Manitoba's and Quebec's registration rules for sellers outside those provinces instead of pointing to them.
- October 19, 2026, Kinsta Review: We said Kinsta marks Launch and all larger plans as recommended for ecommerce; WP 2 is not marked, so the review now names the marked plans. We also said Kinsta's pages disagreed on which plans get the first month free; Kinsta's plan documentation now lists Single 35k, Single 20GB, WP 2 and Launch, on monthly or annual billing. Rating unchanged.
- October 19, 2026, Best Web Hosting in Canada and Best Managed WordPress Hosting: The comparison tables in both roundups still showed Cloudways' entry price as USD $14 a month, the Premium (NVMe) price. They now show $11 a month on Standard (SSD) storage or $14 on Premium, matching the rest of each article. The Canada roundup's table also now lists Cloudways' Calgary data centre (on AWS) alongside Toronto and Montreal. Rankings and ratings are unchanged.
- October 5, 2026, Kinsta Review and Kinsta vs WP Engine: Kinsta's infrastructure documentation now says its hosting runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), replacing its previous Google Cloud setup. We had said Kinsta runs on Google Cloud. Its 30 data centre locations, including Montreal and Toronto, prices and our ratings are unchanged. We also updated one remaining Cloudways starting price in our managed WordPress hosting roundup from $14 to $11.
- October 5, 2026, Best Managed WordPress Hosting and Best Web Hosting in Canada: Cloudways' cheapest DigitalOcean server is USD $11 a month on Standard (SSD) storage; we had listed the $14 Premium (NVMe) price that its pricing page shows by default. We updated the starting price, the yearly totals ($132 a year; $396 over three years) and the Kinsta review's alternatives list. We also corrected a sentence that called SiteGround the cheapest of the four in year two: a bare Cloudways server costs less, so the sentence now compares SiteGround with Cloudways including its email, CDN and malware protection add-ons. Rankings and ratings are unchanged.
- October 4, 2026, Xero Review for Canadian Small Businesses: Xero's Canadian pricing page now lists its two add-ons as starting prices: expense and mileage claims from CAD $5/month and project time and cost tracking from CAD $10/month. We had shown them as flat prices. Plan prices and the rating are unchanged.
- October 1, 2026, Homepage and Payments topic page: The Payments top pick showed Helcim, the #1 in our narrower Square vs Moneris vs Helcim comparison, instead of Square, the #1 in our best POS systems roundup, because the comparison had been updated more recently. Each topic now names the article its top pick comes from. No rankings changed: Helcim is still the #1 in that comparison and in our trades payments roundup.
- October 1, 2026, Wave Review for Canadian Small Businesses: Removed a line saying customers who joined Wave Payroll before April 2, 2025 keep their earlier pricing. On Wave's payroll page, that date relates to a change in US state pricing, not Canadian pricing. Canadian payroll prices were re-checked and unchanged.
- October 1, 2026, Best Payroll Software in Canada: Added a condition to our statement that every tool remits source deductions for you: Wave's help centre says it only remits once you are approved for its direct deposit and have your CRA payroll account number on file, and that it supports monthly remittances only. Rankings and prices were unchanged.
- October 1, 2026, Shopify Review for Canadian Online Stores: Clarified the payout account rule. We said payouts must go to a Canadian chequing account. Shopify's Canadian requirements page says that applies to CAD payouts; USD payouts, available on Advanced and Plus, can go to a USD chequing account at a Canadian or US financial institution.
- October 1, 2026, Jobber vs Housecall Pro in Canada: Clarified Housecall Pro's bank payments. We repeated its pricing page's 1% bank payment rate without a country note. Its help centre says ACH bank payments are only available to businesses based in the US, so Canadian accounts can take card payments but not ACH.
- October 1, 2026, Best Managed WordPress Hosting for Small Business: We said Kinsta's pricing page links to its overage rates rather than listing them. Kinsta publishes them on its overages page: $0.50 per 1,000 extra visits, $0.50 per GB of server bandwidth, $0.05 per GB of CDN bandwidth and $2 per GB of disk per month. We also added Kinsta's new Launch plan (USD $35 a month). Ratings were unchanged.
- September 30, 2026, How to Start an Online Store in Canada: Corrected the British Columbia PST rule for sellers located elsewhere in Canada. We said registration starts once B.C. sales pass $10,000. B.C. Bulletin PST 001 also requires registration, with no minimum, for a seller that solicits B.C. customers for orders, for example through targeted internet advertising. The $10,000 threshold applies to sellers that do not solicit in B.C.
- September 30, 2026, Jobber Review for Canadian Trades: Removed the note about Jobber's up-to-40% new-customer promotion, which ended September 30, 2026, and added Jobber's regular prices for its commitment options, as listed on its pricing page once any introductory discount ends: for one user, USD $39 (Core), $119 (Connect), and $169 (Grow) a month on a one-year commitment, and USD $29, $99, and $149 a month on annual prepaid billing. Monthly no-commitment prices, features by plan, and our rating were unchanged.
- September 30, 2026, Jobber vs Housecall Pro in Canada: Replaced the note that Jobber's annual prices were a limited-time offer ending September 30 with Jobber's regular commitment prices for one user: USD $39, $119, and $169 a month (Core, Connect, Grow) on a one-year commitment, and USD $29, $99, and $149 on annual prepaid billing. Added that Housecall Pro's Instapay adds a 75-cent charge on transactions under $75. Other prices and our recommendation were unchanged.
- September 30, 2026, Square vs Moneris vs Helcim: Corrected our summary of the Code of Conduct for the Payment Card Industry in Canada. We said your processor must tell you at least 45 calendar days before your contract renews; the FCAC says it is you who can decline renewal by giving notice at least 45 calendar days before the renewal date, and that fixed-term agreements can only renew automatically for periods of 6 months or less. We also narrowed the right-to-cancel reminder to agreements with no fixed term, as the FCAC describes it. All processing rates were re-checked and unchanged.
- September 30, 2026, Moneris Review for Canadian Businesses: Corrected our summary of merchant rights: the FCAC does not say processors must notify you 45 calendar days before renewal; it says you can decline renewal by giving notice at least 45 calendar days before the renewal date, and fixed-term agreements can only renew automatically for periods of 6 months or less. Noted that Moneris Online's one-month free trial is labelled a limited-time offer. Rates, fees, and the April 2026 agreement terms were re-checked and unchanged.
- September 30, 2026, Homepage and topic pages: Fixed how the "top pick in every category" list and the topic pages choose their picks. Since September 28 they had shown the newest single-product review instead of the ranked roundup, so Payments showed Shopify POS rather than Square, the #1 pick in our best POS systems roundup. Both now use the ranked roundup. No rankings changed. We also corrected site-wide wording that said all prices are in CAD: we show each price in the currency the vendor bills in and flag USD prices.
- September 29, 2026, Best CRM for Small Business: Restored Zoho CRM Ultimate (USD $65 per user per month billed monthly or $52 billed annually; C$81 or C$65) after Zoho's pricing page served in Canada showed four paid editions. Our September 28 correction was based on a different layout of the same page, which shows three editions on its price cards. We now describe both layouts and corrected the tier features to match the current page: on it, Standard includes workflows and assignment rules, AI agents, and cadences, and customer portals start on Enterprise. Other prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Best Accounting Software in Canada: Corrected how we described QuickBooks Online's Canadian pricing page: it shows three plans side by side (EasyStart, Plus, and Advanced) and lists Lite further down for solo and freelance businesses, not four plans together. Lite (CAD $20/month) is still sold, with its own plan page. Prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, QuickBooks Online Review for Canadian Small Businesses: Clarified which plans Intuit's Canadian pricing page shows: EasyStart, Plus, and Advanced side by side, with Lite listed further down for solo and freelance businesses and Essentials only on its own plan page. Prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Wave vs QuickBooks Online in Canada: Corrected our description of QuickBooks' Canadian pricing page, which shows EasyStart, Plus, and Advanced side by side and lists Lite further down, rather than four plans together. All five plans, including Lite and Essentials, are still sold. Prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Best Invoicing Software for Canadian Contractors: Corrected our claim that QuickBooks' Canadian pricing page lists all five plans. It shows EasyStart, Plus, and Advanced side by side and Lite further down; Essentials is sold only from its own plan page. Prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Kit Review: Rewrote the review for readers in any country, with Canadian details in their own section. Corrected against Kit's help centre: Kit Commerce is available in 39 countries, not 38; the free plan aims to answer support requests within 24 to 72 hours (24/7 email and chat support is listed from Creator up); and we removed a claim about Kit's default return-path that its deliverability articles do not make. Prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Best Email Marketing Software for Freelancers: Rewrote the guide for freelancers in any country, with prices led in USD and Canadian details in their own section. Corrected Mailchimp's plans against its help centre and pricing page: Premium starts at 10,000 contacts (not 500), Essentials automation flows are limited to 4 steps, and we removed an unverified claim about pre-built templates on paid plans. Other prices were unchanged.
- September 29, 2026, Best CRM for Small Business: Rewrote the roundup (formerly Best CRM for Canadian Small Business) for small businesses in any country, with USD prices first and CAD prices in a Canada section. All CAD prices were re-checked and unchanged. We removed product names from GoHighLevel's AI usage charges, which its pricing page now calls premium AI usage.
- September 29, 2026, Shopify Fees (2026): Rewrote the guide (formerly Shopify Fees in Canada) to cover US and Canadian stores. All Canadian prices and rates were re-checked and unchanged. Corrected the Theme Store figures (1,274 paid themes, $210 to $450 on the first page) and the Managed Markets conditions for Canada, which require a GST/HST registration matching the legal business name and do not list Shopify Payments as a requirement.
- September 28, 2026, Best CRM for Canadian Small Business: Corrected Zoho CRM's plan details against its Canadian pricing page. The page lists three paid tiers with prices (Standard, Professional, Enterprise), so we removed the Ultimate price. We also corrected which tier includes which features: customer portals and AI agents start on Professional, and we removed our claims that Standard includes assignment rules and follow-up cadences, which Zoho's plan list does not show. Prices were unchanged.
- September 28, 2026, Best Accounting Software in Canada: Corrected QuickBooks Online multicurrency pricing: it starts on Essentials at CAD $70/month (up to three users), not Plus at CAD $110. Intuit still sells Essentials from its own plan page, although its main pricing page does not show it.
- September 28, 2026, Xero vs QuickBooks Online in Canada: Corrected which is cheaper for a USD account: QuickBooks Essentials includes multicurrency at CAD $70/month for up to three users, slightly below Xero Premium at CAD $80. Xero is cheaper only for teams of four or more, where QuickBooks needs Plus at CAD $110. Also added Essentials to the plan list and user limits.
- September 28, 2026, Xero Review for Canadian Small Businesses: Corrected the comparison with QuickBooks: QuickBooks Online multicurrency starts on Essentials at CAD $70/month for up to three users, not Plus at CAD $110, so Xero Premium is cheaper only for teams of four or more.
- September 28, 2026, FreshBooks vs QuickBooks in Canada: Corrected QuickBooks time tracking: Intuit lists time entry from Essentials at CAD $70/month, not only from Plus at CAD $110. FreshBooks Plus at CAD $42 is still the cheaper option for built-in time tracking.
- September 28, 2026, Wave vs QuickBooks Online in Canada: Added QuickBooks Online Essentials (CAD $70/month, three users, multicurrency), which Intuit still sells but leaves off its main pricing page.
- September 28, 2026, Ontario Construction Act: Holdbacks, Prompt Payment and Lien Deadlines: Corrected the annual holdback release example: the last day to pay is May 25, 2027, not May 23. Day 74 falls on a Sunday and the next day is Victoria Day, so the Legislation Act extends the deadline to the next day that is not a holiday.
- September 28, 2026, How to Start an Online Store in Canada: Corrected sales tax advice: we said online stores always charge the buyer's provincial sales tax. Small suppliers (CAD $30,000 or less over four quarters and in any single quarter) generally do not have to register for GST/HST, and PST registration for out-of-province sellers depends on each province's rules. Also corrected WooCommerce first-year costs and added Shopify Tax's fee details.
- September 28, 2026, FreshBooks vs QuickBooks in Canada: Corrected the verdict: FreshBooks is not cheaper in general. QuickBooks EasyStart costs less for a solo owner who wants full bookkeeping, while FreshBooks costs less at 5 or fewer clients or when you need built-in time tracking. QuickBooks Online now has time tracking noted on Plus and Advanced, its rating is 4.5 to match our accounting reviews, FreshBooks' PaymentEvolution payroll add-on is listed, and Humi is noted as now part of Employment Hero.
- September 28, 2026, Best CRM for Canadian Small Businesses: Corrected currency and pricing: HubSpot, Pipedrive, and Zoho CRM show CAD prices to Canadian buyers, and card conversion fees are typically about 2.5%, not the 35 to 40% we stated. Updated HubSpot Professional, Pipedrive, and Zoho CRM prices. Lowered GoHighLevel from 4.5 to 3.5 because it has no free plan, starts at USD $97/month, and is built for agencies.
- September 28, 2026, Best Email Marketing Software for Freelancers: Corrected plan details: GetResponse Starter includes one automation workflow (unlimited starts on Marketer), so we withdrew "best value for automation" and lowered it from 4.5 to 4.0. Brevo lists CAD prices, Kit's upper plan is now Pro, and Kit's free plan includes one basic automation. Removed an incorrect Brevo cost example and a 35 to 40% currency markup claim.
- September 28, 2026, Best Invoicing Software for Canadian Contractors: Corrected Zoho Invoice (free plan allows 2 users, 500 invoices a year, and includes voice support), Wave (receipt capture is a paid add-on; owned by H&R Block), and Xero (time tracking through the paid Projects add-on; callback support on request). Claims about our own product GetMarkup are now attributed to GetMarkup rather than stated as legal fact.
- September 27, 2026, FreshBooks vs QuickBooks and Best Invoicing Software: Corrected FreshBooks details: its client limit counts active and archived clients, double-entry accounting is available from the Plus plan, and dedicated phone support is listed for the Select plan and during the free trial. In our accounting roundup, corrected FreshBooks bank import to all plans.
- September 27, 2026, Best Payroll Software in Canada: Corrected Wave Payroll: it generates T4 and T4A slips, but employers file them with the CRA themselves using Wave's XML file.
- September 27, 2026, Best Accounting Software in Canada: Removed CIBC from the list of banks with a documented Xero direct feed, which we could not re-verify. Scotiabank and BMO remain.
- September 27, 2026, FreshBooks vs QuickBooks in Canada: Corrected QuickBooks payroll from built in to a paid add-on, and removed an unsourced claim about which software most Canadian accountants use.
- September 27, 2026, Square vs Moneris vs Helcim: Clarified that Helcim's free next-business-day deposits apply to batches up to $25,000 closed by 7 PM MT when your bank accepts Interac e-Transfer deposits, and that the 9¢ and 12.5¢ Interac fees are its first-tier rates.
- September 27, 2026, How to Start an Online Store in Canada: Updated Squarespace pricing to its current CAD prices, corrected Stripe's international card surcharge from 1.5% to 0.8%, corrected Nova Scotia HST to 14%, and noted Shopify Tax fees above CAD $100,000 in sales.
- September 27, 2026, Best Invoicing Software for Canadian Contractors: Updated QuickBooks Online pricing: removed the CAD $70 Essentials price, which the current pricing page did not show, and added the CAD $20 Lite plan. Corrected Wave Pro from CAD $20 to CAD $25 per month.
- September 27, 2026, FreshBooks vs QuickBooks in Canada: Updated QuickBooks Online pricing: removed the CAD $70 Essentials price, which the current pricing page did not show, and added the CAD $20 Lite plan.
- September 27, 2026, Best Invoicing Software for Canadian Contractors: Clarified GetMarkup features by plan (AI quoting and compliance tracking are on Plus), that holdback tracking covers Ontario and B.C. projects, and that the 28-day payment rule applies to Ontario construction contracts.
