Shopify's plan price is the smallest part of the bill for most stores. Card processing usually costs more, and apps, a paid theme, and a domain add up around it. Shopify's fees also depend on the country your store is based in: plan prices, card rates, and tax fees differ between the US and Canada. This guide lists every Shopify fee a small store is likely to pay, with US figures in USD first and a full Canadian section in CAD, and works through what a store selling $5,000 and $20,000 a month would pay on Basic and Grow in each currency.
For our overall take on the platform, read our Shopify review. If you are still choosing a platform, see Shopify vs WooCommerce and how to start an online store.
How we researched this
This is a research-based guide. We did not open a Shopify store, process payments, or receive a Shopify bill. Every fee below comes from Shopify's US and Canadian pricing pages, its Canadian POS, international, and Canada Post pages, the Shopify Help Center, and the Shopify Theme Store, all checked in September 2026 and listed under Sources.
Shopify shows each visitor the prices for their own country. Our checks were served the Canadian (CAD) version of shopify.com/pricing, so we read the US (USD) version from the Internet Archive's copy of that page captured on September 29, 2026, which shows every price labelled in USD. We say which currency each figure is in. Where Shopify's pages disagree or leave a figure out, we say so.
The worked examples are our own arithmetic from those published rates. They are estimates, not quotes.
Shopify plan prices
Shopify charges the same four main plans in both countries, but prices them separately in each currency. Yearly billing lowers the monthly equivalent by about 25%. In October 2026 both pages were also showing some visitors higher yearly prices (USD $29, $89, and $359 a month in the US; CAD $44, $120, and $465 in Canada), which looks like a pricing test, so check the price you are shown before you sign up.
| Feature | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US, monthly billing (USD) | $39/mo | $105/mo | $399/mo | From $2,300/mo |
| US, yearly billing (USD) | $29/mo | $79/mo | $299/mo | n/a |
| Canada, monthly billing (CAD) | $49/mo | $132/mo | $517/mo | From $3,400/mo |
| Canada, yearly billing (CAD) | $37/mo | $99/mo | $389/mo | n/a |
Over a year, a US store pays USD $468 for Basic, $1,260 for Grow, and $4,788 for Advanced on monthly billing, or $348, $948, and $3,588 billed yearly (12 times the monthly price, our arithmetic). The Canadian totals are in the Canada section.
- Basic suits a store run by one person: it has no additional staff accounts.
- Grow adds up to 5 staff accounts and lower card rates.
- Advanced adds up to 15 staff accounts and the lowest card rates below Plus.
- Plus is built for large brands. Shopify lists it as "starts at" a monthly price, so the real price is negotiated.
Starter is closed to new stores. Shopify's help centre says the Starter plan "isn't available to new stores," and neither pricing page lists it.

Shopify Payments is Shopify's built-in processor. On Basic, Grow, and Advanced it is the cheaper route, because Shopify charges an extra fee on every order paid through any other provider. These are the rates on the US pricing page, in USD.
| Feature | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online standard cards | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 30¢ | 2.25% + 30¢ |
| Online premium cards | 3.5% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 3.1% + 30¢ | 2.95% + 30¢ |
| Online international cards | + 1% | + 1% | + 1% | + 1% |
| In-person cards | 2.6% + 10¢ | 2.5% + 10¢ | 2.4% + 10¢ | 2.3% + 10¢ |
| In-person manually entered cards | 3.5% + 10¢ | 3.5% + 10¢ | 3.5% + 10¢ | 3.4% + 10¢ |
| Fee if you use another payment provider | 2% | 1% | 0.6% | 0.2% |
What the table means in practice:
- A $50 online order on Basic paid by a standard card costs $1.75 in processing (2.9% of $50 is $1.45, plus 30¢).
- The same order on a premium card costs $2.05 (3.5% of $50 is $1.75, plus 30¢). Shopify's pricing page does not define which cards count as premium, so check your payout reports.
- International cards add 1 percentage point to the rate, as Shopify shows it on every plan.
- A $50 in-person sale on Basic costs $1.40 (2.6% of $50 is $1.30, plus 10¢). Keying a card in by hand costs more: 3.5% + 10¢.
The US pricing page also lists PayPal wallet payments at "starting at 3.49% + 49¢." Those are charged by PayPal, not Shopify Payments.
For how these rates compare with Square, Stripe, and other processors, see the payment processing fees table in our software price index.
Shopify Payments rates in Canada
Canadian stores get their own rates, in CAD. Each online percentage is 0.1 points below the US rate on the same plan, and in-person card payments have no fixed fee. Canada also has Interac debit, which the US pricing page does not list.
| Feature | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online Visa, Mastercard | 2.8% + 30¢ | 2.6% + 30¢ | 2.4% + 30¢ | 2.15% + 30¢ |
| Online American Express | 3.5% + 30¢ | 3.4% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 3.15% + 30¢ |
| Online international cards | 3.5% + 30¢ | 3.4% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 3.15% + 30¢ |
| In-person cards | 2.6% | 2.5% | 2.4% | 2.4% |
| In-person Interac debit | 15¢ | 15¢ | 15¢ | 10¢ |
| Fee if you use another payment provider | 2% | 1% | 0.6% | 0.2% |
- A $50 online order on Basic paid by a Canadian Visa or Mastercard costs CAD $1.70 in processing (2.8% of $50 is $1.40, plus 30¢).
- The same order on an American Express card costs CAD $2.05 (3.5% of $50 is $1.75, plus 30¢).
- Interac is in person only and flat. It costs 15¢ whether the sale is $5 or $500. More on this in the Canada section.
Fees that apply in both countries
The fee for using another payment provider
If you take online payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, or 0.2% on Plus. The percentages are the same on the US and Canadian pricing pages. You pay this on top of the other provider's own processing fee.
On $20,000 a month in sales on Basic, that is $400 a month to Shopify, in your store's currency, before the other provider charges anything. Unless you have a strong reason to use another processor, Shopify Payments is the cheaper choice on the lower plans.
Currency conversion
When a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify Payments converts it and charges a currency conversion fee. The help centre's fee table lists 1.5% for US stores and 2% for stores in other Shopify Payments regions. Shopify's Canadian international pricing page, however, lists 1.5% per transaction. Check the rate shown in your Shopify admin before you sell in other currencies.
Shopify also says conversion fees and card fees are not returned when you issue a refund.
Chargebacks
Shopify's help centre lists the chargeback fee as $15 USD for US stores and $15 CAD or $15 USD for Canadian stores. If you win the chargeback, the fee is returned to you. You also lose the disputed amount unless you win.
Payout timing
Shopify Payments does not charge a fee for standard payouts in your domestic currency, and payouts follow a set schedule:
- The minimum settlement time is 3 business days in the US and 3 days in Canada. New accounts start with a longer settlement time that shortens as you fulfil orders reliably.
- Banks typically take another 24 to 72 hours to deposit the funds.
- Payments captured Friday to Sunday are sent as one payout, and there is no minimum payout amount in either country.
Shopify's payout pages mention a Multi-Currency Payout fee if you choose a non-domestic currency as your default payout currency. They do not state the amount, so check your admin first.
Shopify POS Pro
Every Shopify plan includes basic in-person selling through the Shopify POS app, at the in-person rates above. For a permanent shop, POS Pro adds staff roles and permissions, in-store inventory management, and in-store pickup and delivery tools.
- In the US, POS Pro costs USD $89/month per location, as listed on the US pricing page.
- In Canada, POS Pro costs CAD $119/month per location, which Shopify's Canadian POS pricing page describes as billed yearly. That is CAD $1,428 a year per location.
- Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations, and up to 200 with Shopify Payments.
- Shopify's Canadian POS page was also advertising free hardware and other extras with one year of POS Pro, described as an offer worth $3,300. That is a promotion.
Our Shopify POS review covers POS Pro, hardware prices, and offline limits in depth, and our best POS systems review compares Shopify POS with Square, Lightspeed, and Moneris.

Shopify Tax
Shopify Tax calculates sales tax at checkout: state and local sales tax for US stores, and GST/HST, PST, and QST for Canadian stores. Its price depends on where your store is based.
| Feature | US store | Canadian store |
|---|---|---|
| Free until | $100,000 USD in sales | $100,000 CAD in sales |
| Fee after that, Basic, Grow, Advanced | 0.35% per order | 0.25% per order |
| Fee after that, Plus | 0.25% per order | 0.15% per order |
| Maximum per order | $0.99 USD | $0.99 CAD |
| Maximum per year, per region (older stores only) | $5,000 USD | $5,000 CAD |
- For stores created on or after May 13, 2026, the $100,000 threshold is a lifetime total. Older stores have an annual threshold and the yearly cap per region.
- On a $50 order, the fee is about 18¢ USD for a US store on Basic (0.35%) and about 13¢ CAD for a Canadian store (0.25%).
- Shopify does not file or remit your taxes. You stay responsible for registering and filing with each state or province where you have to collect tax. For Canadian stores, our Shopify tax setup guide covers GST/HST, PST and QST registration and the settings.
Managed Markets
Managed Markets is Shopify's service for handling international duties, taxes, and compliance on cross-border orders. Shopify's help centre says it is available to businesses based in the continental United States, and to certain stores in Canada and the United Kingdom. It costs 3.5% per transaction on Basic, Grow, and Advanced (3.25% on Plus), with Shopify Payments processing and currency conversion fees charged on top.
Canadian stores face extra conditions, covered in the Canada section.
Duties and import taxes without Managed Markets
Shopify's Canadian international pricing page lists duty and import tax calculation at checkout as an optional add-on at 0.5% per transaction, and says the regular fee is 0.85% with Shopify Payments and 1.5% without it. We could not read the US version of that page, so check your admin if you are a US store. Most small stores shipping within their own country will not need it.
Domains, themes, apps, and shipping labels
Many add-ons are priced in USD. For a US store that is simply your billing currency. For a store billed in another currency, such as CAD, Shopify's billing help page says app charges, POS subscriptions, theme purchases, domain purchases, shipping label purchases, and third-party transaction fees are converted from USD, with a 1.5% currency exchange fee on everything except third-party transaction fees.
Domains
Shopify's help centre says the price of a domain bought through Shopify depends on the extension (.com, .ca, and so on), and it does not publish a price list; the price shows when you search for a domain. Domains bought through Shopify are registered for one year and renewed annually, billed separately from your plan. You can also buy a domain from another registrar and connect it.
Themes
The Shopify Theme Store listed 24 free themes and 1,274 paid themes in September 2026. Paid themes on its first page ranged from $210 to $450 as one-time purchases, and Shopify bills theme purchases in USD. A free theme is enough for most new stores.
Apps
App costs vary too much to give one number. Shopify's own Translate & Adapt app is free for up to two auto-translated languages. Third-party apps for subscriptions, product reviews, or accounting sync often charge a monthly fee, usually in USD. Check each app's price, currency, and billing cycle in the Shopify App Store before you install it.
Shipping labels
Shopify Shipping discounts are country-specific too. The US pricing page shows up to 87% off on every plan. The Canadian page caps them at up to 45% on Basic, 50% on Grow, and 53% on Advanced and Plus. These are "up to" figures, so compare your own rates.
Worked example in USD: a US store
These are estimates from Shopify's published US rates, not quotes. Our assumptions:
- A US store, with all sales online, paid by standard cards through Shopify Payments
- An average order of $50, so $5,000 is 100 orders and $20,000 is 400 orders
- No premium or international cards, apps, paid theme, domain, POS Pro, promotions, or sales tax on Shopify's bill
- Shopify Tax is still free because the store is under $100,000 in total sales
At $5,000 a month in sales (100 orders):
- Basic: plan $39 + processing (2.9% × $5,000 = $145, plus 100 × 30¢ = $30) = $214 a month
- Grow: plan $105 + processing (2.7% × $5,000 = $135, plus $30) = $270 a month
At $20,000 a month in sales (400 orders):
- Basic: plan $39 + processing (2.9% × $20,000 = $580, plus 400 × 30¢ = $120) = $739 a month
- Grow: plan $105 + processing (2.7% × $20,000 = $540, plus $120) = $765 a month
| Feature | Basic, monthly | Grow, monthly | Basic, yearly | Grow, yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| At $5,000/month in sales | $214 | $270 | $204 | $244 |
| At $20,000/month in sales | $739 | $765 | $729 | $739 |
When Grow pays off in the US. Grow's online rate is 0.2 percentage points lower than Basic's, which saves $2 for every $1,000 in sales. On monthly billing, Grow costs $66 more, so it breaks even at $66 ÷ 0.002 = about $33,000 a month in online sales. On yearly billing, the gap is $50, so it breaks even at about $25,000 a month. The 30¢ per order is the same on both plans, so order size does not change the break-even point.
What changes the numbers:
- Premium cards add 0.6 points on both Basic and Grow compared with standard cards, and international cards add 1 point.
- After $100,000 in sales, Shopify Tax adds 0.35% on orders where tax is calculated. At $20,000 a month, that is up to about $70 a month (400 orders × about 17.5¢) on either plan.
- Another payment provider on Basic adds 2% of sales: $100 a month at $5,000, or $400 at $20,000, plus that provider's fees.
- Paid apps can each add more than a Basic plan's monthly price.
Worked example in CAD: a Canadian store
The same assumptions, for a Canadian store paid by Canadian Visa or Mastercard, using Shopify's Canadian rates in CAD.
At $5,000 a month in sales (100 orders):
- Basic: plan $49 + processing (2.8% × $5,000 = $140, plus 100 × 30¢ = $30) = $219 a month
- Grow: plan $132 + processing (2.6% × $5,000 = $130, plus $30) = $292 a month
At $20,000 a month in sales (400 orders):
- Basic: plan $49 + processing (2.8% × $20,000 = $560, plus 400 × 30¢ = $120) = $729 a month
- Grow: plan $132 + processing (2.6% × $20,000 = $520, plus $120) = $772 a month
| Feature | Basic, monthly | Grow, monthly | Basic, yearly | Grow, yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| At $5,000/month in sales | $219 | $292 | $207 | $259 |
| At $20,000/month in sales | $729 | $772 | $717 | $739 |
When Grow pays off in Canada. Grow's online rate is also 0.2 percentage points lower than Basic's, saving $2 for every $1,000 in sales. On monthly billing, Grow costs CAD $83 more, so it breaks even at $83 ÷ 0.002 = about CAD $41,500 a month in online sales. On yearly billing, the gap is $62, so it breaks even at about CAD $31,000 a month.
What changes the numbers: Amex and international cards add 0.7 points on Basic and 0.8 points on Grow compared with domestic cards. After CAD $100,000 in sales, Shopify Tax adds up to 0.25% on orders where tax is calculated, up to about $50 a month at $20,000 in sales (400 orders × 12.5¢). Another payment provider on Basic adds 2% of sales.
In both countries, Basic is cheaper on fees alone at $5,000 and $20,000 a month. The usual reason to move to Grow earlier is staff accounts: Basic has none.
How to keep Shopify fees down
- Use Shopify Payments on Basic, Grow, and Advanced to avoid the 2%, 1%, or 0.6% fee for using another provider.
- Pay yearly once you are sure you will stay: it saves USD $120 a year on Basic and $312 on Grow for a US store, or CAD $144 and $396 for a Canadian store.
- Stay on Basic until you need staff accounts or your online sales approach the break-even points above.
- Start with a free theme and add paid apps only when a specific need justifies the monthly cost.
- Budget for USD add-ons if you are billed in another currency: apps, themes, domains, and labels are converted from USD with a 1.5% exchange fee.
If you're in Canada
Canadian stores pay the CAD plan prices and rates shown above. A few costs and rules apply only in Canada.
Canadian plan prices over a year
| Feature | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly billing | $49/mo | $132/mo | $517/mo | From $3,400/mo |
| Yearly billing | $37/mo | $99/mo | $389/mo | n/a |
| Cost for a year, monthly billing | $588 | $1,584 | $6,204 | From $40,800 |
| Cost for a year, yearly billing | $444 | $1,188 | $4,668 | n/a |

Interac debit
Shopify's list of Shopify Payments methods in Canada names Interac debit for in-person sales through Shopify POS on a compatible card reader, by tap or chip and PIN. It is not available at online checkout, where customers pay by credit card, debit card, or a wallet such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Shop Pay. Interac costs a flat CAD 15¢ per payment on Basic, Grow, and Advanced, and 10¢ on Plus, so a shop with many small in-person sales pays far less on Interac than on card rates.
CAD vs USD billing
Shopify prices Canadian plans directly in CAD, so your plan price does not move with the exchange rate. Apps, POS subscriptions, themes, domains, shipping labels, and third-party transaction fees are converted from USD and carry a 1.5% currency exchange fee (third-party transaction fees are exempt from that fee). Budget a little extra for these lines, since the CAD amount can change from month to month.
If you sell to US customers in USD, the currency conversion fee applies to those payments. Shopify's payouts page also mentions a Multi-Currency Payout fee if you choose USD as your default payout currency, without stating the amount.
GST/HST, PST, and Manitoba RST on your Shopify bill
Shopify's billing help centre says that if your store is located in Canada, your subscription might be charged applicable taxes, such as GST, HST, or PST, shown on a separate line of your bill. It adds that Manitoba's 7% Retail Sales Tax applies to cloud computing services from January 1, 2026, and that Shopify charges it on applicable Shopify charges for merchants with a billing or shipping address in Manitoba.
As an illustration, if 13% HST applies to a $49 Basic plan in Ontario, the bill is $55.37. If you are registered for GST/HST, you can generally claim the GST/HST you pay on business expenses as an input tax credit. Confirm with your accountant how this applies to you.
US stores can be charged sales tax on their Shopify bill too: the same help page lists the US states, districts, and territories where Shopify must collect it.
Shopify Tax and registering in Canada
Shopify Tax can calculate GST/HST, PST, and QST, but you stay responsible for registering with the CRA, and with Revenu Québec or a provincial ministry where required. Our GST/HST registration guide covers when you must register, and the sales tax calculator shows the rate for each province.
Managed Markets for Canadian stores
Shopify's help centre says Canadian stores must sign a self-billing agreement, have a GST/HST registration that matches their legal business name, keep all fulfilment locations in one province, and ship Managed Markets orders with DHL Express or FedEx labels, not Canada Post.
Canada Post and .ca domains
Shopify's Canada Post page lists service-level discounts such as up to 32% off Expedited Parcel and up to 37% off Xpresspost (checked September 2026). A .ca domain bought through Shopify requires meeting CIRA's Canadian presence requirements, such as being a Canadian citizen or a corporation in Canada.
