How sales tax works in Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island charges a 15% harmonized sales tax (HST). The province's tax guide describes it as five per cent federal GST plus a ten per cent PEI component, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency.

The HST generally applies to the same goods and services as the GST. The exception is goods that qualify for PEI's point-of-sale rebates. If you sell those goods, check the CRA's guidance before setting up your till.

Who has to register and charge it

HST registration is handled by the CRA under the federal small-supplier rule. Go over $30,000 in taxable sales in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, and you must register and charge 15%. Read our registration guide for the steps.

Below the threshold you do not have to register, except in cases such as self-employed taxi and ride-sharing drivers. Charlottetown shops selling online can also read our Shopify taxes guide for how the platform applies these rates.

Selling to customers outside Prince Edward Island

PEI's 15% applies only when the place of supply is PEI. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, goods are generally taxed in the province of delivery and most services in the province of the customer's address. A Summerside business shipping to Halifax charges 14%, and one shipping to Winnipeg charges 5% GST.

Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Quebec add their own provincial tax, each with rules for out-of-province sellers. The rates by province guide has the full list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HST rate in PEI?

PEI's HST is 15%, combining the 5% federal GST and a 10% PEI component.

How do I calculate HST backwards in PEI?

Divide the tax-included amount by 1.15. For example, $575 divided by 1.15 is $500, so the HST is $75.

Who administers HST in Prince Edward Island?

The Canada Revenue Agency administers the HST in PEI, so registration, returns and payments all go through the CRA.

Do I charge PEI HST to a customer in Nova Scotia?

No. Goods delivered to Nova Scotia take Nova Scotia's 14% HST, and most services follow the customer's address, so a Nova Scotia client is usually charged 14%.

How much HST is on a $200 sale in PEI?

At 15%, the HST is $30, for a total of $230. Of that, $10 is the federal part and $20 is the PEI part.
