How sales tax works in the Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories charges the federal 5% GST and no territorial sales tax. The CRA's GST/HST rate table lists the territory at 5% GST and 0% PST.

There is only one sales tax account to think about, the GST account with the Canada Revenue Agency. A Yellowknife business that is registered charges 5% on taxable sales delivered or provided in the territory.

Who has to register and charge it

You do not have to register while you are a small supplier. That changes once taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, at which point you must register with the CRA and charge GST. Our registration guide explains how.

Self-employed taxi and ride-sharing drivers must register regardless of sales. Contractors can check what each bill should show in our contractor invoice requirements guide.

Selling to customers outside the Northwest Territories

For a business serving clients in the south, the rate follows the client. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, most services are taxed where the customer's address is and goods where they are delivered. A Yellowknife consultant billing an Edmonton client charges 5% GST, but the same work for an Ottawa client is charged 13% HST.

Clients in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec may also involve a provincial sales tax with its own rules for outside sellers. The rates by province guide shows each rate.
