How sales tax works in Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so the only general sales tax is the federal 5% GST. The CRA's rate table lists Alberta at 5% GST and 0% PST, and the Government of Alberta advertises the same.

The Canada Revenue Agency administers the GST. Because there is no provincial part, Alberta invoices carry one 5% GST line and there is no provincial sales tax account to open.

Who has to register and charge it

The federal small-supplier rule decides when you start charging GST. Once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register with the CRA. Our GST/HST registration guide covers the steps.

Self-employed taxi and commercial ride-sharing drivers must register even below $30,000. If you are a contractor, our contractor invoice requirements guide covers what to put on each bill.

Selling to customers outside Alberta

Charging 5% on every sale is an easy mistake for an Alberta business. Under the CRA's place-of-supply rules, goods are generally taxed where they are delivered and most services where the customer's address is. A Calgary business shipping to Toronto charges 13% HST, and one billing a Halifax client for services charges 14%.

Sales into British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec can also bring provincial tax obligations, since each of those provinces has rules for out-of-province sellers. Check the rates by province guide before shipping there regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Is there PST in Alberta?

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so most taxable sales carry only the 5% GST.

How do I remove GST from a total in Alberta?

Divide the GST-included total by 1.05. For example, $105 divided by 1.05 is $100, so the GST is $5.

Do I charge 5% GST to a customer in Ontario?

Not for goods you deliver there. Goods shipped to Ontario take Ontario's 13% HST, and most services billed to an Ontario address are also charged 13%.

Do I charge PST to a customer in Alberta?

No. With no provincial sales tax in Alberta, a sale delivered to an Alberta customer is charged 5% GST if you are registered, and nothing else.

When do I have to register for GST in Alberta?

When your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that you are a small supplier and do not have to register, with exceptions such as taxi drivers.
