This comparison is for Canadian small businesses choosing fully managed hosting for a WordPress site. Kinsta and WP Engine are the two best-known managed WordPress hosts, both start at the same US price, and both offer a Montreal data centre. The differences are currency, what the entry plan includes, and what happens after year one.

This is a research-based comparison. We did not host sites on either platform. We compared both using their plans pages, help documentation and terms, checked in October 2026. For more detail, see our Kinsta review and our best managed WordPress hosting roundup, which also covers SiteGround and Cloudways.

The quick answer

Choose Kinsta for most Canadian business sites. Its entry plan includes more visits, free malware removal, unlimited migrations, a money-back guarantee, French-language support, and data centres in both Montreal and Toronto. Its price does not change at renewal.

Choose WP Engine if you want to be billed in Canadian dollars, or you want a longer backup history. Check the renewal price first, because WP Engine doesn't publish it.

Price: year one and year two

In US dollars, the two start at the same USD $35 a month. The difference is annual billing and what you pay after year one.

PlanYear oneYear two
Kinsta, annualUSD $350USD $350
Kinsta, monthlyUSD $420 ($35 a month)USD $420
WP Engine Essential, annualC$432, or USD $336Not published
WP Engine Essential, monthlyC$540 (C$45 a month), or USD $420WP Engine says renewal pricing may change

Kinsta's annual plan shows no separate renewal price, and Kinsta describes annual billing as two months free. New customers on Kinsta's annual entry plan also get the first month free, paying $0 at signup and $350 after the first month.

WP Engine's annual price is a first-year price for new customers on Essential. Its terms say that price isn't valid for upgrades or renewals, and it doesn't publish the renewal rate. The year-two price may be higher, so ask WP Engine for the renewal price before you commit.

Our totals multiply the published prices and exclude tax.

Paying in Canadian dollars

This is WP Engine's clearest advantage. Its plans page lets you choose Canadian dollars, so a Canadian card is charged in CAD with no conversion. Kinsta's pricing page says prices are in USD, and it bills in US dollars only.

When a Canadian card is charged in a foreign currency, the card issuer converts it and usually adds a fee. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada uses 2.5% as an example. On a USD $350 year with Kinsta, that is about USD $9 in conversion fees on top of the exchange rate. Check your card agreement for your own rate.

What the entry plan includes

Kinsta includes more traffic and more hands-off extras. WP Engine includes more bandwidth and longer backups.

Kinsta's single-site plan lets you choose billing based on 35,000 visits or 20GB of server bandwidth a month. It includes 10GB of storage, 125GB of CDN bandwidth and daily backups kept for 14 days. Every Kinsta plan also includes:

  • Free malware removal
  • Unlimited free migrations
  • A free staging environment
  • Cloudflare CDN, edge caching and a managed firewall
  • Unlimited users

WP Engine Essential with one site includes 25,000 visits, 10GB of storage and 75GB of bandwidth a month. Every plan includes auto-renewing SSL, a Cloudflare-powered CDN, one-click staging, security patching and plugin risk scans, and automatic and on-demand backups. WP Engine says it keeps backups "for no less than 30 days and no longer than 60 days." A managed firewall with advanced DDoS protection is a paid add-on.

Over the limit. Kinsta keeps sites online and charges USD $0.50 per 1,000 extra visits, $0.50 per GB of server bandwidth, $0.05 per GB of CDN bandwidth and $2 per GB of disk space a month. WP Engine's FAQ says it charges an overage for each 1,000 visits over your limit. The FAQ quotes $2 per 1,000 for plans with its older names, so confirm the current rate for Essential.

Canadian data centres

Both host in Canada. Kinsta lists two Canadian locations for WordPress hosting, Montreal (ca-montreal-1) and Toronto (ca-toronto-1), and says its infrastructure runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). WP Engine lists Google Cloud Montreal for its shared plans. It says new sites are created in the region closest to you at signup and can be moved.

For most businesses, no law requires Canadian hosting. Quebec is the exception worth knowing. Its private-sector privacy law requires a privacy impact assessment before personal information goes outside Quebec, including to a host. Toronto is outside Quebec, so a Quebec business that wants to avoid that step should pick Montreal, which both offer. Our web hosting in Canada guide covers the provincial rules.

Support, guarantees and email

Kinsta's support is 24/7 chat inside its dashboard, in 8 languages including French. Kinsta doesn't offer phone support. WP Engine lists 24/7 technical support.

Kinsta has a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers. On plans with a free first month, the 30 days start after the free month ends. We did not find a money-back guarantee or free trial advertised on WP Engine's plans page.

Neither includes email mailboxes. Kinsta recommends Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho Mail, and WP Engine's FAQ suggests a third-party email host. Budget for one of those on top of hosting. Our .ca domain guide covers registering the domain your email will use.

Which should you choose?

Choose Kinsta if you:

  • Want the most fully managed service, with malware cleanup and migrations included
  • Expect between 25,000 and 35,000 visits a month
  • Want a price that doesn't change at renewal
  • Need support in French, or want a Toronto data centre
  • Want a money-back guarantee while you try it

Choose WP Engine if you:

  • Want to be billed in Canadian dollars
  • Want 30 to 60 days of backups
  • Need more bandwidth than visits, for example a site with large media files
  • Have confirmed the renewal price with WP Engine

Our verdict

4.5

Kinsta is the better choice for most Canadian business sites. For the same USD $35 a month, it includes more visits, free malware removal, unlimited migrations, French-language support, a money-back guarantee, and data centres in both Montreal and Toronto, at a price that doesn't change at renewal. WP Engine is the pick if paying in Canadian dollars matters to you or you want longer backup history. Get its renewal price in writing first.
